Hashomer Hatzair came into being as a result of the merger of two groups, Hashomer ("The Guard") a Zionist Scouting group, and Ze'irei Zion ("The Youth of Zion") which was an ideological circle that studied Zionism, left wing socialism and Jewish history.

The idea behind Hashomer Hatzair may be simply summed up as follows:

"We know of no country to which the great majority [of the Jewish survivors in Europe] can go in the immediate future other than Palestine. Furthermore, that is where all of them want to go. There they are sure they will receive a welcome denied them elsewhere."

The crede of Hashomer Hatzair is solidly based on the principles of service to the Jewish people, personal integrity, and self-reliance. This is an apt ideology in the face of British obtuseness, and overall attitude of the entire world towards Jewish suffering.

Before you offer your two cents regarding Israel and Palestine, and the current imbroglio in the Middle East, let us create some perspective. Any alternative narrative that you may come up regarding the Zionist enterprise in Palestine can not compare to the"narrative" of the attempt to end Jewish history in Euope.

For all those who demand jusice for this, that, or the other cause, let me remind you of the enormity of the maelstrom into which the Jews of Europe were thrown against their will. Attempts to deny or otherwise revise Jewish history are a testament to the inherent weakness of other competing arguments.

The attempt today to question the legitimacy of Israel is to deny history. If such a denial leads to conflict, then Israel must defend itself.
