During August 2-6 2011, many members of the Beinin family will be meeting for a week of rest and relaxation on Bailey Island, Maine. A t shirt design commemorated the occasion.
In a nutshell...Ida's father was mayor of a town (that's our politicol gene) and got to visit the Czar on his birthday and bring him presents...The town folk were so furious that a Jew had gotten to visit the Czar that they had a pogrom, cut his legs off, and threw him in the river. The river was very cold, he was fished out and lived. Grandma stayed to nurse him until he died, and then she came to America to join the family. They had already been here, I think, 18 years, and I have a description of them thinking "What a peasant" as she came off the boat with a satchel over her shoulder.
August 20, 2011: This story is confirmed, based on an account by Frida Meth as recorded in a movie that was made at Duddy and Dotty's house in Roosevelt, New Jersey at Lia's first birthday party.
